The life path number, and how it is built

The life path number is the cornerstone of numerology. It is calculated entirely from your date of birth, which makes it the most stable number in a numerology profile, fixed from the moment you are born.

The method is simple addition followed by reduction. You add up all the digits of your birth date, then keep reducing the result until you reach a single digit. For a date like the fourteenth of March 1990, you would add one, four, three, one, nine, nine, and zero.

That sum is twenty-seven. Reduce it by adding two and seven to get nine. So in this example the life path number is nine. The arithmetic is the same for any date, however you write it.

There is one common exception. The numbers eleven, twenty-two, and thirty-three are usually treated as master numbers and are not reduced further, because the tradition assigns them special significance. If your intermediate or final total lands on one of these, many practitioners keep it as is.

Each life path number carries a broad theme. One is associated with independence and initiative, two with cooperation and sensitivity, three with expression and creativity, four with structure and discipline, and five with freedom and change.

Continuing, six is linked with responsibility and care, seven with analysis and introspection, eight with ambition and material mastery, and nine with compassion and completion. The master numbers eleven, twenty-two, and thirty-three are read as heightened, more demanding versions of related single digits.

It is worth being clear about what numerology is and is not. It is a symbolic system for reflection, not a measurement of anything physical, and it should be treated as a lens for thinking about yourself rather than a prediction. Used that way, the life path number is a tidy starting point for the rest of a numerology chart.
